This was originally written as a response to a friend in 2017. It is even more pertinent today as we wait for the rapture of the church.

 

Some interpret 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 as if it is referring to the rapture. They would not be wrong, because the rapture is integrated as closely as possible to God’s wrath, all while keeping the followers of Christ protected from the time of wrath.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 NASB (1) "Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. (2) For you, yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. (3) While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. (4) But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; (5) for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; (6) so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. (7) For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. (8) But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. (9) For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, (10) who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. (11) Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing."

Points and context to consider.

1. “Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you.”

   The word times is the Greek word chronos and can be long or short. Epochs, or as other translations have put it, seasons, is the Greek word kairos. There is a similarity between this word and times, but the word kairos applies to a measure of time or a period when things are brought to a crisis.

   Paul would not have been so presumptuous as to say “you have no need of anything to be written to you” unless he had already spoken to them clearly, distinctly, and with no misunderstanding about what those words meant. Paul's words were adequate and well defined as he spelled out the hope that we have of Jesus coming back in the clouds to collect us, His bride, the church. An event that has little to do with the seven years of God's wrath; an event that is to be unleashed upon the earth only moments after the rapture.

2. “for you, yourselves know perfectly the day ...”

   The question for us today is, what day is Paul talking about? 

   This can either be the day of our gathering back to Jesus as the bride, or it is the day in which God pours out His wrath upon the earth.

   Day seems like such a simple word. “day” is the Greek word hēmera. 

   For the church, it means “the last day of this present age;” the age of grace, or, the end of the church age.

   We need to understand that Paul was specifically speaking of the day in which we depart from this earth. Paul, in his second letter to the church in Thessalonica, said this.

   2 Thessalonians 2:3 NASB (3) "Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,"

   As you can see above the translators followed the pattern established by the state church of England and changed the early and acceptable term, departure, with the knowledge of the King of England in 1769 by using the term apostasy.

   Apostasy means an abandonment. Up to the point that Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, it could easily be said most people had come find church pointless, and therefore, abandoned the church.

   The problem: apostasia is not the base word from which “they” acquired the translation. The origins of apostasia is aphístēmi (G868), and means to depart.

   The Word Study Dictionary emphasizes the word Departure. “apostasía; gen. apostasías, fem. noun from aphístēmi (G868), to depart. Departure, apostasy.”

   So we can ascertain that the church must depart before the antichrist character can emerge upon the scene. Do not get me wrong, he is currently standing in the shadows and will soon emerge to confer his acceptance of this seven-year peace agreement, which seems to be something that America is trying to shove down Israel's throat as I write this (9/29/2025)

   In Revelation 6:16-17, hemera is one of the defining words pertaining to God's wrath.

   Revelation 6:16-17 NASB (16) and they *said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; (17) for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

   This highlighted information is critical to our understanding. It is also clarified with an eye-opening explanation. “Eastern usage of this term differs from our western usage. Any part of a day is counted as a whole day, hence the expression “three days and three nights” does not mean literally three whole days, but at least one whole day plus any part of two other days.”

   As I read through the account of Jesus' death and resurrection, I expected to see three full days. No matter what the explanations from "learned" teachers, nothing made sense, that is, until I understood how the Jews understood the concept of three days. We can apply this same concept to the narrative pertaining to the Prophet Jonah. I reference Jonah because Jesus used Jonah as an example of what His own death and resurrection would look like. For me, this only demonstrates how variable God is with His timetable.

3. "The day of the Lord.”

   The day of the Lord only shows up 26 times when you do a search for the phrase using the KJV. “Of the Lord” is one Greek word kurios and means “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding.”

The Day of the Lord.

• Isaiah 2:12 AMP “For there shall be a day of the Lord of hosts against all who are proud and haughty and against all who are lifted up--and they shall be brought low--” [Zeph. 2:3; Mal. 4:1.]

  Malachi 4:1 AMP “FOR BEHOLD, the day comes that shall burn like an oven, and all the proud and arrogant, yes, and all that do wickedly and are lawless, shall be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.”

• Zephaniah 2:3 declares, “it may be you shall be hid in the day of the Lord.”

• 1 Corinthians 5:5 conveys the message that the spirit [of believers] may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

If I were looking for examples of being hid, I would look to Daniel, who was NOT there when his three Hebrew brethren were thrown into the fiery furnace. I could take this to the next step, for the three were NOT harmed in any way. Another example comes from the saga of Noah. When the time for the flood came, God put Noah and his family into the ark and closed the door.

A portion of the passage we were reading tells us in verse nine that God did not appoint us to wrath.

Is this, or does this, define what is coming?

• Isaiah 13:4 explains that it shall come as destruction.

• Isaiah 34:8 expresses that this day is vengeance.

• And Joel 1:15 also says this time is destruction.

• Zephaniah 1:8 calls the day the Lord's sacrifice. [This is God doing the sacrificing.]

• Zephaniah 1:14 states that the mighty shall cry bitterly.

I am convinced that the rapture will be the thing that hides us from the wrath; and, what is coming is destruction.

4. “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;”

   Thieves sneak up on you, but this is also equated to a pregnant woman. If you have never fully experienced this process, you may never understand. Pregnancy does not sneak up on you. You are fully aware of what is going to happen, and you have nine months to prepare. Once the labor pains begin, you have minutes or days.

5. “You are children of light, and the children of day; we are not of the night nor of darkness;”

   I suppose this is telling us that we have NO excuses.

6. “Therefore, let us not sleep as do others but let us watch and be sober.”

   Sleep means to be slothful. Alert tells us to give attention to or take heed.

7. “... be sober, putting on the breastplate or faith ...”

   Sober means to be calm. Calm when you know that horrible things are about to happen.

8. “For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Thessalonians 5:9

   Appointed is the Greek word aphístēmi and means to set, put, and place.
   Wrath means temper or violent emotion.
   Salvation is deliverance, preservation, safety, or deliverance from molestation.

   Molestation has its basis in any unwanted harassment or mistreatment.

One of the questions you put forth is,

Why would Paul/God see a need to tell this body about the rapture and their understanding of how this will work, seeing as they would never experience the rapture?

For Paul to say, I have no need to write to you (about the rapture) is indicative of the fact that Paul had already spoken to this body of believers in a clear and concise manner.

The common understanding is that Paul only preached in Thessalonica for three weeks. As I read about Paul’s impact on this community, I am hard-pressed to understand how Paul could do this in only three weeks. Adding to this confusion of mine is the fact that Paul met at the local Synagogue on the Sabbath, a Saturday. We have little additional definition and, therefore, logically assume that Paul was only at the Synagogue on three Saturdays. Based upon how we do church in the modern world, that gives Paul about three hours of teaching time; that is if they wholeheartedly gave the pulpit to this stranger.

[Ask yourselves, did these people know that Saul, the pharisee, now a follower of Christ, was the skilled theologian among the Jewish council and therefore equipped to teach them from, say, Deuteronomy? Or, as a follower of Christ, was he welcome to bring a message perceived as heresy among the devout Jews? Neither of these would make sense unless they had a policy that allowed people to speak, as long as they were within traditional boundaries.]

What are we doing here?

We are applying Gentile, Sunday School mentality, which leads you to believe that your mind and the ability to speak only works on Sunday when the church is open.

The Biblical Illustrator commentary says this about Paul's interactions in Thessalonica.

“The (book of) Acts contain little or no account of the apostle’s labors among the Gentiles. We only read of three weeks’ preaching in the synagogue, followed by the conversion of many Jews, “devout Greeks,” and “chief women.” Upon this the unbelieving Jews, enlisting the “roughs” of Thessalonica, created a riot which led to the departure of Paul and Silas by night. It is evident, however, from the Epistle, that the apostle’s work here was both more extensive and of longer duration than the history would seem to intimate (insinuate.)”

Why should they “know” perfectly well?

They did not have Bibles from which to assure themselves or train their thinking once Paul was gone; they only had the words and actions of Paul and a handful of people who could remember what Paul said and the fervor with which he delivered the message.

Fortunately, we have other evidence, for Paul, in writing this second letter, states,

(9) For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. (10) You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers; (11) just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, (12) so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 1 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NASB

Based upon what Paul said about their first stay in Thessalonica, he, along with others, worked to support themselves. The idea of working night and day may have included additional time spent exhorting, encouraging, and imploring each one of you... so that you would walk in a manner worthy of God. Everything they did, they did in a manner that was correct according to Jewish standards and traditions; and that their lives demonstrated that they were blameless and without fault before these people.

In time, Paul sent Timothy back to Thessalonica to continue preaching this gospel of Jesus, that he had heard Paul preach, not only in Thessalonica but also in Berea.

What did they now know?

“The day,” in Jewish custom, was to understand three days as, one entire day, and any part of two others. This makes Jesus' own three days very understandable. Therefore, the day can also be seen as “the week of years” that we also see in Daniel, something that also operates on the same principle; it is a variable.

I am convinced that the church's rapture will be the thing that hides us from the wrath.

One last aspect of your question.

Why would God think He needed to share this information with the church (the body of believers) in Thessalonica?

1. They were struggling with fear.

   We don't really understand why until 1 Thessalonians 4.

“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord, Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NASB)

They thought that Christ had already come; that they had been left behind, and now needed to be reinforced in their understanding and faith. I am convinced that we all, at some point, need to be supported because we have constant attacks on our relationship with Jesus.

How does Satan attack?

He attacks the foundations of our faith, understanding, relationships, righteousness, and moral standing.

1. God is NOT merely sharing this information with one small group of people (such as the church in Thessalonica;) this is being shared with the family that is to come, and, we are that family.

   2 Timothy 3:16 NLT instructs us that “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

Paul’s direction is always to stay alert as we wait for the Lord's return. I can see many benefits to living like this, in a calm, dignified manner, as it shows people what God is like.

What I see others posting is high watch times and days. September 30, that's today; October 3, and October 6,7.

Eyes open, hearts on fire as we wait for Jesus return.

And God saw the light. Genesis 1:1-4.

 In my previous post, I had hoped to establish that all things were created perfectly from the moment Jesus first spoke all things into existence. I believe that the primary creation happened in verse one.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 NKJV

But writing and thinking through the events of the first few verses of Genesis, I am reminded that Jesus, in time, will voluntarily set aside His divinity, which includes His knowledge, insight, and power, so that He could become a human being, untainted by sin, and thereby bring redemption and salvation to all who would receive this great salvation.

The sacrifice or price that would be paid to become a human was to quite literally be born a blank slate, and it may well mean that Jesus had to be told about the scriptural narrative that describes actions that He performed in creation by Joseph and, in time, the Holy Spirit. Put yourself in Jesus's shoes for a moment and then try to imagine what you are supposed to do with information like this.

“For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: "I am the LORD, and there is no other.”
Isaiah 45:18 NKJV

I feel strongly about this perspective. If such a revelation caused you to go into a tailspin, as it did me at first, my suggestion is that you relax and reestablish yourself in the words of Jesus that we find in Genesis and the Hebrew that makes those words work; and remember that Jesus is God.

The idea that Jesus lost His knowledge of who created all things was never a question that we see the Apostle John fretting over. John's opening statement about Jesus demonstrates that he has become convinced, without question, that Jesus was, is, and ever shall be God.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
John 1:1-3 NKJV

I pointed out in the previous post that Jesus told us that He beheld Satan's fall in a rather dramatic way.

“And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
Luke 10:18 NKJV

The problem with that is that we have few details that define what Satan's fall looked like aside from that. Just because we do not see those details does not mean it did not happen.

So, let's assume that the lights entirely went out.

Did God/Jesus merely quake in fear that Satan's fall included a horrendous destruction?

No, the recovery process began with a peculiar act.

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
Genesis 1:2 NKJV

There is a peculiar usage of the word hovering. It is the Hebrew râchaph. One of the defining words means to brood. The Word Study Dictionary refers to this hovering as an eagle hovering over its eggs. Honestly, it works the same for chickens or foul. All of this is part of the process of growth, which is an aspect of brooding. The Strong's concordance adds that it is, by implication, to be relaxed.

Does a hen seem stressed as it broods over the chicks?

Only if a threat arises and then she will fight. If the mother hen flutters or moves, it is only to maintain a satisfactory temperature necessary for the embryo to progress in their growth.

So I can assume that God, in His brooding, was actively in the process of restoring and rebuilding the creation. The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit were actively involved in the recreation of the creation.

“Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.”
Genesis 1:3 NKJV

When God said, Let there be light, who was speaking?

It's a rhetorical question, and I am not demanding an answer, but the simple answer is that Jesus spoke those words into existence. Watch what happens next.

“And God saw the light that it was good; and he divided the light from the darkness.”
Genesis 1:4 DRB

When I read narratives like this, I picture God standing there watching as Jesus precisely spoke creation into existence a second time (as though Jesus/God was troubled by the severity of the damage;) only moments pass when I realize how foolish such a thought process is, as God is not impacted by time and space as we know it. I remind myself that God knew that Satan would, in turn, destroy, deceive, and attempt to capture the hearts of God's creation, and all of this was a part of God's eventual plan of redemption that ends with the eternal removal of Satan once and for all.

Light is the Hebrew word 'ôr. It means illumination or (concretely) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, …) Strong's concordance/dictionary.

To assume that this is only the sun is erroneous as it also applies to stars, which are suns, just like ours; the difference is that other suns tend to be much larger than ours, and they are scattered across the universe at incomprehensible distances away from the earth; and then there are the reflective bodies, such as moons and planets. Seeing as there is no reference to heat, as we will soon see, then, while I cannot exclude the sun, it clearly speaks to the variety of things that emit or reflect light.

Question, can you typically see the effects of a flashlight on a bright day?

No, so it is obvious that the lights had gone out and the light that Jesus is now speaking into existence, once again, was not a blinding light. This tells me that the illumination was like some nights when the sky was clear.

When we were teens dad took the family to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Besides the spectacular

formations, it is known for the nightly flights of bats that emerge from the cave (there are thousands of them.) 

On the tour, the Park Ranger takes us to a deep place in the cavern, warns the audience not to move, and then turns out the lights for about a minute. You literally cannot see your hand in front of your face, as there is NO illumination at all. It is a darkness that feels like it permeates you. Moments later, they turn the lights back on, and you are instantly reminded of how spectacular the ancient formations and reflective lighting truly are.

Divided is the Hebrew word badal. It is a primary root and means to be divided or separated: It also means to come over, dismiss, make a separation, make a distinction, partition, separate, or set apart.

In Genesis chapter 1, verse 4, we see this: “and God divided the light from the darkness.”

Darkness is the Hebrew word chôshek. The Strong's # is H2822. It is from H2821; the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness: - (darkness), night, obscurity.

When I think about the effects that Satan had on the earth, these words stand out.

• misery,

• destruction,

• death,

• ignorance,

• sorrow,

• wickedness,

• obscurity.

The Strong's # associated with chôshek - is H2821- châshak, enunciation khaw-shak'. It is a primitive root meaning to be dark (as withholding light); transitively to darken: - be black, be (make) dark, darken, cause darkness, be dim, hide.

Now ask yourself, when did Jesus begin to address Satan's actions?

So Jesus did not only address the lights going out, but He immediately began attacking the damage that Satan brought about.

If you want a definition of who Satan is and what he does, you got it.

Jumping forward in time to the Garden. Eve, having bought into the deception, hands the fruit, with her teeth marks on it, to her “husband.” We have no indication that he was deceived, so Adam sets aside what God had told him and chooses to die with his “wife.”

It doesn't matter what you call it; the treasonous act was to hand over the dominion – rule and control over the earth. Sounds bad, and lacking a relationship with Christ is a hopeless situation. But God had a plan all along.

“So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:14-15 BSB

We get bruised all the time. Some foolishly believe that this bruising is God's wrath (tribulation;) it is NOT. It is just life, so get over it. Note, however, that God tells the serpent that the seed of the woman will crush your head. You don't typically get over a crushing; you die. Our hope is, to some degree, based on the reality that through Jesus, Satan's head will be crushed – or at least put away forever.

One of the loathsome things I perpetually hear is, No one knows the day or the hour. These naysayers espouse this even though the Apostle Paul told us, 

“...you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief.”

“Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you, yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. There seems to be a concerted effort among church members and leadership to promote deception.
Note how Paul says that “we,” the “believer,” is NOT in darkness, that the day would overtake us like a thief; this is because those outside the family only acknowledge the rapture. After all, it is a scenario portrayed in scary movies, and they seem to have serious doubts about being left behind.

What is “the day”?

There are two schools of thought.

1. That it is a day of judgment.

   There are two of those “days” that apply to judgment. 

   One would be when He comes back at the end of the seven years and silences all who have come to fight against Him. He does this with the breath of His mouth, and there will be a river of blood. 

   The second day of judgment will come at the end of the thousand-year reign and climax with the white throne judgment. 

   Two things happen in relationship to the white throne, and they are packaged under the heading of the second day or final judgment.

   Satan will be released once again, and he will deceive the nations. Yes, during the millennial reign, people with a free will shall repopulate the earth and continue to live, and some will choose to ignore the ongoing message of God’s goodness, which they can witness firsthand.

   Deceived by Satan, they will attempt to kill God and His people as they surround the Holy City, God, and His people. He kills them with the breath of His mouth and burns them up.

   The next aspect of this judgment is that all the dead, quite possibly from the beginning of time, will be brought before this throne. Here is where Matthew 25 kicks in because Jesus, the judge, and shepherd, separates this crowd into two representative groups - "sheep and goats." To the sheep, He will say, enter into the eternal kingdom. The goats will go to eternal damnation with Satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet who are already there.

So much for judgment.

2. The second way people perceive "the day" is through the catching away of the church.

   This event has little to do with judgment, although many many perceive it as judgment because it is associated with the Bema seat pg of Christ.

   The passage that gives much great concern is,

   “But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.”
   (Romans 14:10 NASB)

   The Bema seat is more of a time for passing out rewards for a job well done.

Fully aware that we do not have to be deceived because we are NOT in darkness, then what can we know?

To the Pharisees, Jesus said you can read the signs of the weather.

"The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' "And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.” (Matthew 16:1-4 NASB)

Jesus' first response when the disciples implored Him to "Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

"...Jesus answered and said to them, "See to it that no one misleads you."
(Matthew 24:4 NASB)

See to it G3005 légo – Is to say, affirm over, maintain, teach, point out with words, to speak of, or mention.

This affirmation is what you do to yourselves.

Mislead G4105 planáo - To cause to wander, lead astray.

How many different ways can we be caused to wander?

Let's see: The news, as they would never deceive me.

Are you kidding?

Haven't you noticed how every news station repeats the exact same words, no matter how small or large the station is? Someone is pulling their chains, telling them to feed you what they want you to know.

Another recent event was Elon Musk purchasing Twitter and then revealing that men like

have been assisting in process of eliminating our civil rights, by blocking our freedom of speech.

Paul in his second letter to the church in Thessaloniki, told them

"Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction," (2 Thessalonians 2:3 NASB)

Notice the nondescript word "it." It is fascinating how a simple word can imply or point to so many things. “It” can apply to the beast, antichrist, the New World Order, the methods used to make their evil plans work, or the people who think they can control us. I was not born during the days of the Nazi concentration camps, but I can read and am a piteous history student. But this leading out of the right way into error is precisely what Hitler and the Nazi party did to Germany. If you don’t believe that, try reading about Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as he details how the Nazis led the majority of Pastors, and for a moment, even Bonhoeffer, to the point that they merely played their worship music louder to drown out the screams of the Jews on the trains as they were carted off to their deaths.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:3, we know that the Greek word apostasia had been  manipulated  in the King James Version of the Bible to read apostasy - or falling away instead of departure (indicating a departure  of the church to be with Jesus.)  This was done to convey the anger of the state church, the Catholic church in the 1500s, over people leaving the church for Protestantism. The previous version of the Bible was the Geneva Bible and existed for almost 100 years, with the word apostasia accurately being translated as departure. 

A three-page introduction. What is the point? 

Since we are not in the dark, we should be able to see what is coming and how close we are to our catching away. 

Jesus addressed just such a condition when He spoke to the Pharisees and Sadducees. 

He said, 

“Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky but cannot discern the signs of the times?”

One of those signs was the fig tree, and that is where Amir Tsarfati comes into play. I will add that many are now trying to tell us that the fig tree does not refer to Israel. This is part of the deception!

Jeremiah 8:13, Hosea 9:10, and Joel 1:7 all refer to Israel as a fig tree, and the content of the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24-25 is concerning events before and during the 70th week of Daniel – also referred to as the Great Tribulation. That means the fig tree Jesus is referring to is the nation of Israel, and when it puts forth leaves and the branch is tender (which indicates new growth) we can know that summer is near. From that example Jesus said that the generation that sees this will not pass away before all things in the Olivet Discourse take place.

What that means to you and me as Christians living at the end of the time of the Gentiles and the church age is that we have been given an entire generation’s notice about the coming of the Lord. He will come first for His church before the Tribulation and then with His church to end the Tribulation. We were given this information by our gracious and loving Lord not so we would be ready for the Rapture – we should always be ready for that event – but so we would tell others not only that they also need to be ready, but more importantly, why and how they can be.

No one knows the day or the hour of the Lord appearing in the air to meet the dead in Christ and the living saints. However, He did tell us to be ready in Matthew 24:

Matthew 24:44 KJV – “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

The phrase “hour you do not expect” could also be translated as “a season never supposed”. That carries with it a couple of potential meanings. Either that Jesus is coming for us at a time when things are unimaginable, like now, or that Jesus is coming at a time when few think He will, also like now. Whichever meaning is the one that God intended, both make clear that the hour is late. The Jews are back in the land, the fig tree has put forth leaves, and the unknown day or hour is likely very near.
